Animal Poison Control
The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is a unique, emergency hotline providing 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week telephone assistance to veterinarians and animal owners. The Center's hotline veterinarians can quickly answer questions about toxic substances found in our everyday surroundings that can be dangerous to animals. There is a $45 consultation fee paid by the animal owner, veterinarian or product manufacturer.

What would you/your pet do during an emergency?
Evacuating with Your Pet
Think about where you will go with your pet and how you will get there if you have to leave home during an, emergency. In planning for an emergency evacuation:
Arrange for family or friends outside of the affected area to shelter your pet.
Identify animal-friendly hotels/motels outside of the affected area. .
Talk with your local veterinarian, boarding kennel, or grooming facility to see if they can offer safe shelter for your pet during an emergency.
Create a Go Bag for your pet or service animal (See Pet Go Bag Checklist).
Practice evacuation plans to familiarize your pet with the process and increase his/her comfort level.
Know your pet's hiding places so you can easily find him/ her during an emergency.
Keep in mind a stressed pet may behave differently than normal and his/her aggression level may increase. Use a muzzle to prevent bites. Also be advised that panicked pets may try to flee.
TIP: Pets in carriers are allowed on MTA subways, buses, and trains. When an evacuation order is declared, pets too large for carriers will also be allowed, provided those animals are muzzled and controlled on a sturdy leash no longer than four feet. The City will announce when this policy is in effect. Bring supplies to clean up after your animal. Only legal animals will be allowed. As a reminder, service animals are always allowed.

PAWS NY is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides pet care assistance to individuals experiencing both physical and financial obstacles so that they can keep their pets and continue to benefit from the human-animal bond. We focus on helping seniors, individuals with disabilities, and individuals suffering from permanent or temporary illness.
Through our House Call Program, our extensive network of volunteers visit clients in their homes and provide pet care assistance that clients cannot do on their own. Services include (but are not limited to) dog walking, litter box maintenance, grooming, provision of food/water, and transportation to the vet. PAWS NY also provides foster and emergency care for pets when a client unexpectedly finds himself in the hospital.

Pet Requiem is a veterinary house call service offering wellness check-ups, geriatric and hospice care and compassionate in-home euthanasia in the New Jersey and New York Metropolitan area.

Infinite Hope that has recently expanded its mission from shelter/rescue/adoption to also helping NYers (mostly Brooklynites) who are hit by the downturn and can no longer care for their animals. They recently had a food/clothes/funds drive and are busy now with fostering and trying to re-home animals who would otherwise likely be abandoned or neglected due to their owners' economic emergencies..
